Abstract

This report examines how digital platforms reshape meanings and practices of redistribution across Europe’s mixed welfare economies. Drawing on qualitative research in five countries, it analyses how platform design, interfaces, and narratives influence how people understand and perform acts such as donating, sharing, and mutual aid. The study highlights the role of “redistributive imaginaries”—shared cultural frameworks that frame prosocial contribution—and shows how platforms both enable new forms of participation and reinforce individualised responsibility. It situates digital giving within broader tensions between welfare state provision and informal solidarity, offering scenario-based insights into the future of redistribution under conditions of platformisation.
