Service Guidelines

Service goals

Gutenberg Open Science is the institutional open access repository at JGU and a service of the University Library for scientific publishing and the provision of research data.

Gutenberg Open Science supports the goals of free and unrestricted access to publicly funded scientific publications and the provision of research data in accordance with the FAIR principles as formulated in the Open Access Policy, the JGU publication guidelines and the Guidelines for the Handling of Research Data (in German).

To ensure complete and clear attribution of publications to their authors and institutions, as well as the publicity and recognition of their achievements, we refer to the reserach information system of JGU

Gutenberg Open Science is an interoperable building block in the network of comprehensive information infrastructures for science and follows recognized information quality standards to ensure the long-term and sustainable usability of publications and research data.

Publication guidelines

1. Service description and collection mandate

The collection mandate of Gutenberg Open Science refers to all publications by JGU employees. This includes both first and second publications, including electronic versions of original print publications. First publications of research data are also included.

When publishing on Gutenberg Open Science, the following services are provided free of charge by the University Library:

  • Provision of metadata in accordance with recognized library collection standards by qualified personnel
  • Assignment of permanent Internet addresses (DOI and URN)
  • Secure storage (and availability) for a period of at least 10 years
  • Provision of the document for research and download
  • Provision of metadata for scientific search services via technical interfaces. All Metadata is provided under the CC0 license to increase the visibility of the service.
  • Advice on all related issues

2. Requirements for using Gutenberg Open Science

By agreeing to the deposit license (in German), the rights holder transfers to the University Library the right to make the publication or research data publicly available under a standardized open access license. In legally justified cases, the data may be made available under the conditions of copyright law. In addition, he/she transfers to the University Library the right to carry out the necessary measures for long-term archiving.

3. Requirements for publications and research data

The document to be published is complete and complies with the formal standards and formats commonly used in science (e.g. monographs, dissertations, journal articles, book contributions, data papers, data collections).

It meets the generally recognized scientific quality requirements and identifies the intellectual property of others (received ideas and quotations are identified as such and the rights of third parties, e.g. for figures, illustrations and tables, have been clarified). Information on the topic of good scientific practice can be found on the pages of the Academic Integrity project or in the DFG's “Guidelines for Safeguarding Good Research Practice” code.

If you publish in the collection "JGU-Publikationen" or "JGU-Hochschulschriften", the main file of the publication must always be uploaded in PDF format.

The original files of the documents and any additional archive copies created are free of technical protection measures. These include, in particular, mechanisms in the sense of Digital Rights Management (DRM), password protection and restrictions on the usability of documents (copy & paste, printing).

Open file formats suitable for long-term archiving must be used to store the documents. Here you will find a list of recommended formats (in German).

Master's theses can be included in Gutenberg Open Science in exceptional cases and on the special recommendation of the supervisors. We do not publish Bachelor's theses or term papers.

4. Availability and long-term archiving

All publications and research data are made available on Gutenberg Open Science for a period of at least 10 years. In addition, long-term archiving of publications is carried out in cooperation with the German National Library (DNB). This service is free of charge for you. With the deposit license, you give us your consent to the storage of data by the DNB for any necessary technical data migrations.

5. Versions of documents and deletions

Once published, documents can only be deleted from the server or blocked from access in exceptional cases (especially in the event of legal obstacles). Any costs incurred for this are to be borne by the authors.

A revised version of an already published document will be made available as an independent document on Gutenberg Open Science.

6. Technical operation of the service

The technical realization of Gutenberg Open Science is based on DSpace, an internationally popular open-source software for publication and data repositories.

The OAI interface can be accessed via https://openscience.ub.uni-mainz.de/oai/request?verb=Identify. Metadata contains the elements of the Dublin Core Element Set and is available under the Licence CC0 in the formats oai_dc, xmetadissplus, epicur and oai_openaire.

The technical infrastructure is hosted in the data center of Mainz University and is subject to the central privacy policy of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the privacy policy of Mainz University Library (in German). The servers concerned are backed up decentrally on a daily basis. Furthermore, the pure metadata is exported daily and also backed up.

Access to this service is stored anonymously in the web server's log files. Personal user profiles are not created. No data is passed on to third parties. Gutenberg Open Science does not use any techniques aimed at evaluating the access behavior of individual users.
