Christen und Muslime in der Capitanata im 13. Jahrhundert : Archäologie und Geschichte

Abstract

The volume interlinks, in an interdisciplinary manner, macro- and microhistorical analyses of the conditions and forms of Christian–Muslim coexistence in the medieval Mediterranean, with particular focus on the Capitanata in the thirteenth century and the case studies of Lucera and Terriveri. It documents an international conference held in 2012 at the German Historical Institute in Rome, which presented the results of the DHI project “Christians and Muslims in the Capitanata.” The contributions in the volume systematically progress from broad analyses of the Mediterranean and the Kingdom of Sicily to regional studies of the Capitanata and the specific case studies located there. Combining a wide range of historical, archaeological, anthropological, and philological approaches, the studies, through their methodological diversity, together offer a comprehensive yet nuanced picture of the complex ethno-religious, social, and political dynamics within the contact zones of southern Italy under the Hohenstaufen and Anjou rulers.
