Abstract

This text is the dissertation entitled: "Translation Teaching in Undergraduate Programs in Hispanic America: a multiple case study of six institutions with translation programs (Argentina / Colombia / Venezuela). Due to the few and disperse number of studies in this field, this thesis explores the current situation of translation training in six undergraduate translation education colleges located in those three Latin American countries. Based on an exploratory-descriptive case study completed at a distance, the author compares and analyzes the curricula of the 15 programs offered by those institutions and the pedagogical settings in which they have emerged. In addition, 179 surveys and 35 interviews, all aimed at inquiring into the students, graduates and teachers' opinions regarding the academic experiences developed within the respective programs, are conducted and analyzed. The information gathered allows us to present a comprehensive view of the current situation involving the teaching of translation at each institution. Due to its qualitative approach, and data obtained from a non-probabilistic sample, the author does not intend to extrapolate the results obtained in this study to each and every educational setting, nor is there an intention to generate definitive statements regarding the teaching of translation in the Hispanic American context. Rather, it is our aim to offer a starting point for future and perhaps more extensive research on the topic of translation teaching in Latin America, hoping to improve the status of the profession at the regional and global level.
