The synthesis of different colloidal inorganic nanoparticles and the investigation of their electronic coupling with fluorophores is presented. Gold nanoantennas have been assembled with the water-soluble chlorophyll-binding protein (WSCP) in different ways. By means of combined atomic force microscopy and single-molecule spectroscopy investigations on the WSCP-bridged gold nanoparticle dimers, an excitation enhancement acting on the WSCP could be demonstrated. In addition, the electronic coupling of CdSe quantum dots (CdSe-QDs) and a perylenediimide derivative (PDI) was investigated. The CdSe QDs acted as energy donors for the PDI. Besides the energy transfer from the 1S(e) state, a second ultrafast energy transfer component was found at high PDI loadings, which involves hot excitons and is in the range of the intraband relaxation time of the CdSe-QDs. In addition, electron transfer from the ground-state of the CdSe QDs to the excited PDI was demonstrated. Furthermore, the synthesis of water-soluble spherical type II QDs with the structure CdTe/CdSe/ZnS is presented.
