Fitness sports and fitness appropriate behaviour are well established as a major part of leisure and everyday life among many young people. Unlike studies focused on training science research, this article looks at adolescent life in the context of fitness from a sport pedagogical perspective. The motives used to justify the product-oriented fitness sport and their relation to current troubles of adolescent life will be discussed. Through an autoethnographic approach it will be demonstrated, why adult researchers face particular challenges studying the field of youth, fitness and lifestyle. Based on these findings, key characteristics of fitness sports are developed. An introduction to the research design of a projected study, which focuses on knowledge cultures and justification of actions in fitness sports of young people, provides an outlook on sport pedagogical research in the near future. |
