Title: Lernen leicht gemacht? : Arbeiten an einer Chrestomathie des Hieratischen

Abstract: This paper describes the concept of an introduction into Hieratic in the form of a new chrestomathy. Teaching and learning Hieratic reveal particular difficulties: changes in orthography and palaeography as a result of long term use, impact of the individual hand, abstraction, ligatures, abbreviations and a high number of signs. Therefore, the chrestomathy presents a clear layout and extensive background information. Twelve exemplary texts (from Old to Middle Kingdom) form the basis and every chapter contains didactically structured exercises, reading aids and an annotated bibliography. Furthermore, teaching materials such as a basic vocabulary and a search list classified by similarity are included.
