One of the main goals of the COMPASS experiment at CERN isthe direct measurement of the gluon polarisation inside thenucleon($\Delta$G). In deep inelastic scattering ofpolarised 160 GeV muons off polarised nucleons the photongluon fusion process (PGF) allows the determination of thegluon polarisation. Within the framework of this thesis adedicated trigger system for the measurement of $\Delta$Gwas developed. This system uses the coincidental detection of the scattered muon and the hadronic products ofthe PGF process to produce a highly selective triggerdecision within 600ns. The cross section of the PGF isdominated by events where a quasi real photon ($Q^2 \approx 0$) has been exchanged. Therefore thescattering angle of the muon can not be used to separate thescattered muons from non interacting beam particles, insteadthe energy-loss of the muon was used for this purpose. Theso called energy-loss trigger consists of pairs of scintillator hodoscopes with excellent time resolution. The coincidental detection of the hadrons is provided by twohadron calorimeters which for this purpose have beenequipped with special summation electronics.
