In the course of this thesis an airborne mass spectrometer was set up for measurements of HNO3 and HONO on the new German research aircraft HALO (AIMS - Atmospheric chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer). The HNO3 and HONO molecules are chemically ionized via reaction with SF5- ions. Based on laboratory experiments the operating parameters were optimized, individual instrument components were assembled in a HALO-rack, and an inlet line was designed that minimizes wall effects and facilitates background and HNO3 calibration measurements during flight. In laboratory studies the sensitivities for HNO3 and HONO were examined as well as interferences with water vapor and ozone. The HONO measurement intercomparison campaign FIONA at the European Photoreactor (EUPHORE) in Valencia was the first measurement campaign with AIMS. During the open intercomparison measurements the HONO mixing ratios measured with AIMS agreed within +-20% with the median of another 9 HONO observations. The first aircraft measurements with AIMS will be performed during the HALO missions ML-CIRRUS and TACTS. Besides the setup of AIMS the analysis of the uptake of HNO3 in ice particles in contrails and cirrus is the second central topic of this thesis. For the first time the uptake of HNO3 in contrail ice crystals was investigated systematically based on in situ measurements (CIRRUS-III). In November 2006 cirrus clouds and almost 40 incidentally encountered persistent contrails were sampled above Germany and Northern Europe during CIRRUS-III. The measurements took place at altitudes between 10 and 11.5 km and temperatures between 210 and 230 K. The HNO3 concentration was determined by means of NOy measurements. On average the ice-bound fraction of total nitric acid was larger in contrails (6 %) than in cirrus (3 %). The gas phase equivalent mixing ratio of the ice-bound nitric acid was 6 pmol/mol in cirrus, 14 pmol/mol in contrails, and 21 pmol/mol in young contrails (age<1 h). The HNO3/H2O molar ratio in ice crystals was slightly higher in contrails than in cirrus clouds at similar meteorological conditions. The higher values in persistent contrails probably originate from high HNO3 concentrations in the aircraft plumes during contrail formation. The observed decrease of the HNO3/H2O molar ratio with increasing ice crystal effective diameter suggests that the HNO3 concentrations in ice crystals of young contrails are determined by the uptake of exhaust-HNO3 into the freezing aerosol particles. The concentrations in ageing contrails are controlled (to an increasing degree with age) by trapping of ambient HNO3 in growing ice crystals. This study contributes to an improved understanding of HNO3-uptake in atmospheric ice particles. Motivated by this work persistent contrails can be considered as an atmospheric laboratory for the investigation of trace gas uptake in growing ice crystals.
