Abstract
This work investigates the lives, activities, and works of the singers of the French chapel during the early years of the Italian Wars from 1494 to 1515. This research frames this period through a theoretical paradigm shift that governed the transition from earlier devotional practices to symbols of power and triumph. The triumphal processions, masses, and feast days in which the singers participated are identified and analyzed within the symbolic culture of triumph of the wars. These findings are compared with musical evidence, including the works of the Jean Mouton, Loyset Compère, and Bertrandus Vaqueras, produced in connection with the wars. Their occasional works are revisited and analyzed in greater depth, while the continued importance of devotional works is argued.
