„Ein charismatischer und zutiefst beeindruckender Mensch“ : Interview mit Michael Matheus über die Wirkung seiner Werke und seine Begegnungen mit dem Papst

Abstract

The interview conducted by journalist Christian Jöricke with the historian Michael Matheus sheds light on Matheus’s encounters with Pope Francis, including the presentation of two publications and the conversations that accompanied these meetings. At the center of the discussion are the volumes Luther in Rome and Places of Refuge and Networks of Personnel: The Campo Santo Teutonico and the Vatican, 1933–1955. The interview demonstrates that historical research can generate considerable resonance within both ecclesiastical and political contexts. At the same time, Matheus reflects on his personal impressions of Pope Francis and emphasizes the significant challenges faced by the pontificate in the course of ongoing processes of ecclesiastical reform. Finally, key perspectives on church renewal are outlined, particularly the intensification of ecumenical cooperation, the enhancement of the role of women in the Catholic Church, and the strengthening of synodal and regional decision-making structures.
