Johann Schöffer, Buchdrucker zu Mainz

Abstract

Die Arbeit beschriebt das Leben und Wirken Johann Schöffers, des Erben der Mainzer Druckerei Johannes Fusts und Peter Schöffer d.Ä. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die 315 heute noch nachweisbaren Drucke. Neben der bibliographischen Erfassung der Titel, die ergänzt werden durch Hinweise zur Illustration und zur Typographie, wird versucht anhand dieser die Entwicklung und die Veränderungen in der Werkstatt aufzuzeigen. Von Interesse ist dabei, dass sich die historischen Ereignisse und religiösen Strömungen teilweise parallel, teilweise zeitlich versetzt im Verlagsprogramm widerspiegeln.

The paper describes the life and work of Johann Schoeffer. He was the son of Peter Schoeffer sen. and the heir to him and Johann Fust, the partner of the first and oldest printing house in Mainz. The thesis focuses on the 315 book titles which are provable today. The chronological bibliographical collection of Schoeffer’s works, include details regarding the titles, illustrations and printing types and also show the changes and development within the printing house. Another interesting finding is, that within Johann Schoeffer’s publisher’s catalogue the contemporary historical events and religious or currents (“Reformation”) are partly reflected in parallel, partly time-lapsed.
