With regard to the use of clay rock as a geological barrier of a deep geological repository as well as the current search for a repository site in Germany, extensive investigations of the interaction between the actinides of the radioactive waste and the clay rocks are necessary. In this context the knowledge of the actinide species is of central interest, due to its major influence on its solubility as well as its sorption and migration behavior. In particular the oxidation state has far-reaching effects on the solubility and mobility of the actinides. In order to achieve a deeper understanding of the speciation of actinides interacting with clay minerals under repository-relevant conditions, this work deals with sorption and diffusion experiments considering different actinides. In addition to the investigation of the sorption and diffusion, liquid-liquid extraction, CE-ICP-MS measurements and various X-ray spectroscopic methods were used to analyze the speciation of the actinides in solution and at the solid phase. First, the influence of CO2 on the sorption of Th(IV) onto kaolinite was determined and redoxstable reference data for the sorption of plutonium have been obtained by the Th-experiment conducted under anaerobic conditions. When studying the sorption of Pu(IV) onto kaolinite, a decrease in sorption between pH 2 and 7, with a minimum at pH 4, could be observed. The speciation investigations based on CE-ICP-MS measurements, liquid-liquid extractions and the calculation of the Eh-values indicate that this reduced sorption was caused by the partial oxidation of the dissolved plutonium to Pu(V). Furthermore, Pu(IV) could be detected as a plutonium species on the solid phase by means of X-ray spectroscopic investigations. Alongside HR-XANES and RIXS reference spectra for Pu(III)(aq), Pu(IV)(aq), and Pu(VI)(aq) solutions were obtained. The experiments with Na2S2O4 show an influence of reducing agents on the oxidation state of the dissolved plutonium and the course of its sorption onto kaolinite. Diffusion experiments of Np(V) in Opalinus Clay in different setups of the diffusion cell demonstrate the basic suitability of the tube- and filter-free setup that is used in this work for such experiments. In the present work, a strong correlation between the oxidation state of the actinide and its interaction with clay as a solid phase could be shown.
