The present work deals with the phase behavior and the phase transition kinetics of charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions. One of the central objectives of this thesis was the construction of a combination light scattering experiment (SED: static, elastic, dynamic) and verification of applicability by testing a wide range of suitable suspensions. In addition, other optical and preparative methods were applied for supplementary investigations during my research stay in Japan. The choice of colloidal systems is based on two currently discussed topics in colloidal physics: phase behavior and phase transition kinetics. All of the colloidal systems examined here are composed of spherical latex particles in aqueous suspension. Compared to previously examined systems, however, they have a significantly lower surface charge. With the SED in particular, it is demonstrated that a weakly charged system near the fluid-crystal phase boundary forms a temporary glass with a bcc-like short-range order instead of crystallizing. Glasses made of charged latex balls are only known for very high particle concentrations. The low concentration glass observed here is remarkable for both the theoretically unexpected point in the phase diagram and for the strong tendency to crystallize. At the lowest particle concentrations, some samples could be stabilized for several days before crystallization started. According to classical nucleation theory, the nucleation rate increases exponentially with particle concentration, which was studied on a different colloidal suspension over a large concentration range utilizing microscopy, static light scattering and reflection spectroscopy. The experimental results show that the nucleation rate becomes concentration independent at high particle concentrations. For crystal growth, classical theory expects a steep increase with increasing concentration followed by a plateau. However, the growth rate determined by Bragg microscopy of another weakly charged suspension shows no significant concentration dependency and is an order of magnitude slower than expected. Overall, it is shown that a reduced charge has a great influence on the phase diagram and the solidification behavior. In contrast to crystallization, melting of colloidal crystals has only been little investigated. Consequently, this work is supplemented with some initial studies on melting. The surfactant-stabilized thermosensitive systems could not be characterized by the SED, since the melting occurs outside the measuring range of the device. However, melting of one of the already mentioned latex systems could be observed for the first time by analyzing the free three-dimensional expansion of a crystal introduced into ultrapure water.
