Synthesis and Photophysical Properties of Functionalized 1-Oligoalkynylamides Torsten Schweikert Abstract of Ph.D. Thesis The synthesis of 1-oligoalkynylamides and further introduction of end standing functional acceptor groups in the chromophores is described. Such donor-acceptor substituted alkynes with a nitrogen directly bonded to the alkyne unit are of special interest concerning their photophysical properties. A copper(I)-catalyzed Cadiot-Chodkiewicz cross-coupling reaction of terminal 1-alkynylamides 1 with 1-bromoalkynes 2 was applied for the synthesis of functionalized 1-oligoalkynylamides 3. The evaluated reaction protocol tolerated different functional groups and proceeded in high yields up to 99 %. NR1EWGNR2R1EWGR2Br5 mol-% CuI30 mol-% NH2OH·H2O2.0 eq. n-BuNH2MeOH0 °C - 40 °C, 0.5 - 2 h34 - 99 %1.5 eq. 213R1: Phenyl, 2-Iodophenyl, Benzyl, AlkylR2: Alkyl, Hydroxyalkyl, O-Tetrahydropyranyloxyalkyl, Methylester, 4-Nitrophenyl, 4-Cyanophenyl,4-Dimesitylborylphenylnn The photophysical properties of the different donor-acceptor substituted chromophores were investigated by UV-spectroscopy. The electron spectra showed different effects on the charge-transfer-band upon variation of the acceptor group or enlargement of the alkyne unit. The solvatochromic effects on the absorption bands proved the existence of a permanent dipole moment in the chromophores. Electrooptical absorption measurements were applied for determination of dipole moments in the ground state and Franck-Condon excited state. The electrical dipole moments in the ground state in different solvents have values within the range (9.4 – 12.2)10-30 Cm. Upon optical excitation the dipole moments increased by (25.0 – 92.3)10-30 Cm. Extension of the alkyne π-spacer from one to two triple bonds resulted in an increase of the change of the dipole moment after excitation to the Franck-Condon state, while the ground dipole moments of both compounds are comparable. Further extension to three triple bonds however gives a massive decrease of the change of the dipole moment after excitation to the Franck-Condon state, which might result from decreasing conjugation between the donor nitrogen and the acceptor nitro group over three triple bonds. The synthesized 1-diynylamides were further used in the synthesis of functionalized 3-alkynylindoles. In a palladium-catalyzed heteroanellation sequence a nitrogen or sulphur nucleophile could be introduced in the 2-position of the indole.
