Abstract

In the context of this dissertation, Rydberg exciation (n > 50) of 40Ca+-ions were detected for the first time. For the excitation of the calcium ion with one photon starting from a 3D metastable state, a coherent light field with a wavelength in the vacuum-ultraviolet spectrum (122nm - 123 nm) is needed. The main part of my work was the improvement of the VUV-lightsource, which generates the required high energy photons. This VUV-lightsource is composed of three individual laser systems. One improvement was the implementation of an active frequency stabilization in each of these laser systems. Furthermore, the power of the generated VUV-light could be enhanced. In addition, a new lasersystem with an emission wavelength of 580nm was developed and implemented in the VUV-laser system. Thus, the generation of coherent light with a wavelength near 123nm is now feasible. As an improvement in the VUV-beam shaping, a new telescope was implemented in the setup. Thus, a smaller focal size (~10 micrometer) of the VUV-beam at the position of the ion is achieved. This leads to more accurate beam adjustment. During the time of my dissertation, three different traps were used for the execution of the experiment. In this thesis, the first measurement of Rydberg excitation performed in the latest trap has also been shown. By comparing this measurement with the previous measurements, we get a factor of 75 higher excitation rate. We conclude that the improvement of the VUV-laser system was successful. As result of this thesis, we could establish Rydberg excitation to the 22F,52F, 53F and 66F states. The wavelengths of these transitions are (3D(5/2) -> 22F) : 123.256119(5) nm, (3D(3/2) -> 52F) : 122.041913(5) nm, (3D(3/2) -> 53F) :122.032384(10)nm and (3D(5/2) -> 66F) : 122.04050(5) nm. Also, we investigated the interaction of the Rydberg ion with the trapping field and we implemented more complex techniques like Rydberg excitation of an single ion out of an ion string.
