Todays knowledge of the embryogenesis of Selaginella is based mainly on results by BRUCHMANN (1897-1920). According to him the main axis of the embryo is a leafy shoot, which curves around when forming an outgrowth laterally at the hypocotyl basis, resulting in foot formation. As a first lateral shoot of the main axis the rhizophore branches off at the hypocotyl basis. This ramification differs notably from the typical selaginellalean ramification. The rhizophore and root formation at the foot of Selaginella selaginoides cannot be satisfactorily interpreted from a morphological point of view. SIEGERT (1974) provides a more coherent interpretation by transferring the ramification mode of adult plants to embryos. The foot now represents a reduced primary shoot, the leafy shoot and first rhizophore being lateral shoots of it, as are the additional rhizophores and roots of Selaginella selaginoides. SIEGERT's (1974) hypothesis until now has not been verified by studying embryos themselves. Therefore the embryogenesis of Selaginella pilifera was examined by serial sections. The histological results do not support SIEGERT's morphological interpretation, but rather seem to contradict it. Therefore a new hypothesis is introduced taking into consideration both the ramification of adult plants, and the histological results. According to this hypothesis the leafy shoot is the primary axis, foot and first rhizophore being lateral shoots thereof.en_GB
