A picture book narrates in two components: text and pictures. It expresses its narrative structure not only by the text but also mainly by the pictures. The pictures have their own specific narrative power. Recent developments on the German book market require to refocus on the interesting interaction of text and pictures in the picture book. Consequently, this thesis analyses the so-called hybrid picture books, i.e. picture books that combine the physical book with digital enhancements e.g. the audio digital system tiptoi, the audio pen TING or books enhanced with augmented reality. The research question of this thesis analyses how narrative structures of hybrid picture books vary from narrative structures of the common picture book. This thesis focusses on the specific narrative structure of the medium and examines how digital enhancements influence the narrative structure of common picture books. Based on the work of Marie-Laure Ryan this thesis develops a specific analysing tool. This analysing tool is a medium free model i.e. it may be used to analyse common picture books as well as hybrid picture books. It can also extend to future products and media. The analysis of the picture books proved that the hybrid picture books differ from common picture books far less than expected. The reasons for this are that current hybrid picture books are developed closely to common picture books and innovations (e.g. missing sequence of pages, narrative structure as used by computer games) are not applied yet. Especially interactivity offers great potential that is not recognised yet. The deep understanding of narrative structure of hybrid picture books that has been gained from this thesis may help designing a new kind of picture books.en_GB
