The heterogeneous reactions of N2O5, HNO3 and NO2 on various synthetic mineral dust substrates and on natural Sahara dust were for the first time investigated with an aerosol flow tube. The uptake coefficient gamma was determined for the reaction of N2O5 with Sahara dust, Arizona Test Dust, Calcite and Quartz at ambient temperature, atmospheric pressure, different relative humidities and N2O5 concentrations between 5×10^12 and 3×10^13 molecules/cm^3. The uptake coefficients measured for N2O5 were between 1.90×10^-2 (Sahara dust) and 0.63×10^-2 (Calcite), independent of relative humidity and N2O5 concentration. HNO3 was identified as a gas phase product. Uptake of HNO3 on Sahara dust was observed, NO2 was not taken up. An upper limit for the uptake coefficient of NO2 on Sahara dust was determined as gamma = 4×10^-4. Uptake of N2O5 and HNO3 influences the photochemical cycle of NOx and NOy in the troposphere. Uptake of N2O5 induces a reduction in concentrations of O3 and NO3, decreasing the oxidative strength in the troposphere.
