For this work, the metal organyls of rare earth metal ions with various sterically demanding biphenyl substituents are investigated. These are synthesized by salt metathesis reactions from lithiated biphenyl substituents and the corresponding metal halides. Depending on the selection of the rare earth metal and the biphenyl substituent, different products or products of subsequent reactions can be radiographically investigated. Yttrium(III)chloride and ytterbium(III)chloride, together with the lithiated biphenyl substituent PmphLi, form the heteroleptic isotypic aryl compounds Y(Pmph)3(thf)2 and Yb(Pmph)3(thf)2 (Pmph = 2',3',4',5',6'-pentamethyl-(1,1'-biphenyl)-2-yl, thf = coordinated tetrahydrofuran). Reactions of rare earth metal chlorides with lithiated Mph (2',4',6'-trimethyl-(1,1'-biphenyl)-2-yl) give various C-H activation products. On the one hand isotype benzyl compounds of the composition [Li(thf)4][Ln(Mph*)4] with Mph* = (4,6-dimethyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-2-yl)methyl are synthesized with the lanthanide ions Pr3+, Sm3+, Gd3+ and Tb3+. On the other hand, Y3+, Nd3+ and Er3+ react under the same conditions to the isotypic caged compounds with the compositions [(Li(thf))3(Mph~)3Ln]. The substituent Mph~ (2'-yl-2-(methyl-yl)-4,6-dimethyl-1,1'-biphenyl)) is modified under these reaction conditions so that it becomes bidental. The lithiated biphenyl substituents MphLi and PmphLi form AT-like complexes of the composition [Li(thf)4][Sc(R)4] with scandium(III)chloride; no C–H bond activation is observed. Furthermore, a C–H activation product of the substituent Tph (2',4',6'-triisopropyl-(1,1'-biphenyl)-2-yl), a homoleptic aryl compound of trivalent chromium having the composition Cr(Tph)3 and a butyl-aryl compound of yttrium(III) having the composition [Li(thf)4][Ln(nBu)(Tph)3] (nBu = n-butyl) are isolated during this work.
