When the hurricane Kyrill moved across Europe on January 18th 2007, people were prepared for the natural event by the media and current coverage, which was supplemented by own pictures by users of the photo sharing platform Flickr. Flickr is part of the growing presence of the new media in everyday life and, as a phenomenon of everyday cultural communication, offers new possibilities of networking, which have a specific communicative practice and a culture of self-practices, in which performance comparisons, self-staging and the struggle for attention are anchored. The photographs of the hurricane Kyrill on Flickr form the basis of this analysis, in which various fields of research are interwoven. Thus, the event leads to disaster research, the choice of the source in photography and media research, and the two poles of aestheticization and documentation point to Pierre Bourdieu's studies on the social uses of photography that are transferred to the digital age. The serial-iconographic photo-analysis by Pilarczyk and Mietzner is selected as a method, which is phenomenological and hermeneutic and which links the image interpretation of individual photographs with the serial analysis. The elaborated motif categories are classified according to the four elements, since natural disasters are frequently attributed to them and in them the ambivalence of nature becomes clear. Using the context information on the user pages, the social uses of the photographs are worked out, which are documentary, aesthetic or communicative and partly characterized by a fascination of the destructive. The fact that photographs are ambiguous has advantages for phenomenological investigations, since, in addition to staging, something random is also recorded and traces of cultural, social and subjective life are directly contained. The selection of the image and photographs for the platform Flickr can thus be a proof of mentalities and unconscious attitudes and this can be used for psychoanalysis. In image descriptions, keywords and comments, the users of the platform tell more of themselves than would be possible through a photo. In their presentation of their own life and the perception of the hurricane as a natural disaster some philobatic and oknophilic attitudes are shown. Both terms are from Michael Balint's study of thrill and have the abandonment and recovery of security on the topic as it is also found in the photo motifs. In them, the systematization of the disorder during and after the hurricane Kyrill comes to the fore. The experiences are made visible in the photographs, in order to classify them into their own lives and to sort them again after they have been disordered.en_GB
