Abstract Yb-doped CaGdAlO4 (CALGO) is a very suitable material for high power ultrashort pulse laser applications. Its outstanding properties comprise a high thermal conductivity and an inhomogeneously broadened Yb-emission band caused by the statistical distribution of the Ca2+- and Gd3+ /Yb3+-ions on the same lattice site. The material crystallizes in the K2NiF4-structure along with a wide variety of other rare earth aluminates and gallates with a general formula ABCO4. However, the statistical cation distribution ist the particular reason for a series of anisotropic structural alterations resulting in the coupled formation of inclusions and color centers. The a priori colorless crystals show a strong, defect-related absorption in the range of the UV-band edge that is responsible for their deep orange coloration. Inclusions/scattering centers of different size are present within the whole sample volume. Applicability as laser medium is strongly restricted thereby, achievable efficiencies are about two to three times lower than the theoretical threshold. The relations between structure and stability of ABCO4-oxides were examined and the significance of a more regular positive charge distribution in the crystal lattice was emphasized as crucial to avoid the said defects. Based on these results variations in melt composition for Czochralski growth were carried out to obtain an improved crystal quality and thus enhance performance of the laser crystals.
