This paper presents an analysis of adolescents’ normative understanding of democracy on the basis of empirical data from 2012 (ESS 6). Adolescents are defined as individuals between 15 and 26 years of age. The benefit of this paper in comparison to previous studies on the same subject is its focus on the following points: (1) the normative understanding of democracy by adolescents is analyzed more detailed (2) the adolescents’ understanding of democracy is compared to that of adults (3) its determinants are studied more comprehensively.rnThe classical concept of political culture as well as the theory of political socialization forms the theoretical framework of this analysis.rnIn this paper it can be shown that young people have a relatively good normative understanding of democracy, but nevertheless it is lower than that of adults. For older adolescents this observation applies just in certain aspects. In addition, it appears that for young people and adults largely the same aspects of the normative understanding of democracy are above or below each group’s mean value. Differences between adolescents and adults are particularly evident for the electoral dimension of democracy and less for the liberal dimension. Important identified determinants of the understanding of democracy by young people are the individual level of education, the individual level of political interest and the educational background of the parents.rnAt the end of the paper implications with references to contents, addressees and actors of civic education are discussed on the basis of the empirical results.rn
