(Un)dressed : how AI reinforces regressive gender politics

Abstract

Originally designed for visual effects, deepfake technology is now widely misused for disinformation and digital harassment, particularly targeting women and marginalized groups. Cases like the Almendralejo incident highlight the serious harm of non-consensual intimate deepfakes, despite emerging legal measures such as the EU directive and Australia’s deepfake ban. However, meaningful change demands more than just regulation—it requires confronting the societal power dynamics that allow AI to be weaponized for exploitation.
