Due to a large number of detector channels in future highly granular hadronic calorimeters it is necessary to find optimisations and procedures to ensure a fast and effective production and calibration. In the framework of the CALICE collaboration a scintillator tile design for SMD SiPMs (surface mounted silicon photomultipliers) is presented which demonstrates high performance in terms of light yield and uniformity. For this purpose, a suitable SiPM is selected which improves the quality of the measurements via crosstalk suppression. These scintillator tiles are mounted on the HBU boards, the readout boards of the CALICE Analog Hadron Calorimeter (AHCAL). Automated gluing and mounting processes were used to precisely fix the tiles on the boards. With these procedures in total 164 HBU boards, including 158 modules of the technological AHCAL prototype, were successfully assembled. Thereby, screen printing and pick and place processes demonstrated the scalability of an automatic assembly. For quality assurance and calibration of these HBU boards a cosmic ray test stand was set up. Accompanying this, a measurement and analysis procedure was developed for a precise calibration of each channel’s performance. With this, an average light yield of 14.0 ± 1.7 p.e. for the ∼22000 channels of the technological AHCAL prototype was determined. A comparison with test beam data validates the high precision of the measurement by a measured offset of 1.1% with a gaussian σ of 4%. In addition, the uniformity of the light yield over all channels of the prototype was investigated and possibilities for improvement were identified. It was also estimated that two of such test stands with modifications could provide a scalable calibration of the entire calorimeter. For further simplification of the production process, the concept of Megatiles, structured, large scintillator plates with reflective TiO2 glue separations, was further developed. For a better understanding, a laser test stand was set up to determine the optical properties of these layers. The results provided indications about the dependencies of the TiO2 glue mixtures and light yield of the megatiles. An optimised HBU sized megatile achieved high light yield in different measurements. In addition, a new analysis method was developed which allows to set a realistic crosstalk upper limit. Another focus of this thesis is the determination of the detection properties of the SHiP experiment for axion-like particles (ALPs). For this purpose, X → γγ decays were simulated and the detector signals of the SplitCAL calorimeter were used for reconstruction. The scintillator layers were used for an energy measurement and the high precision layers were used for a hit position determination. Also hit and energy assignments to the photons were implemented and an energy calibration was performed in the simulation. With the implemented reconstruction a successful determination of the energy resolution of the SplitCAL was calculated. A precise determination of the mass value via different fitting methods was successfully performed in a mass range of m = 0.25−1.5GeV.en_GB
