In this thesis, the leaf characters of the Juglandaceae have been examined for their systematic value. From 48 extant Juglandaceae species a data matrix with 62 leaf characters has been compiled. Additionally, four fossil leaf forms have been analyzed. The fossil leaves originate from two Eocene locations in Germany. The data matrix was mapped on a phylogram by Manos and Stone (2001), using the computer program MacClade® ('character mapping'). Additionally, a principal component analysis (PCA) was accomplished with the computer program PAST®. Most taxonomic units of the Juglandaceae have been recognized using 'character mapping'. Thus the systematic significance of the respective leaf characters has been proved. Furthermore, an evolutionary tendency of indumentum structures has been pointed out. An increasing differentiation of the indumentum structures has been observed between ancestral and derived juglandaceous taxa. In the PCA, the fossil leaf forms clustered in a distinct group, separated from all extant taxa in the analysis. Therefore their systematic position cannot be assigned by a comparison with extant leaves. The fossil juglandaceous leaf forms confirm the evolutionary tendency of the indument structures. With their ancestral indumentum structures, they represent the basis of indumentum evolution.en_GB
