dc.description.abstract'Who studied which subject, when and why?' This phrase implies the basic question of the present study and its subject areas. It contributes to the discussion on educational decisions on societal, organisational and individual level. Initial point of this analysis is a detailed theoretical contextualisation of the theme by several concepts and the discussion of existing research. Within this, characteristics of social structure, the impact of life-orientation and the scope of individual motivations are elucidated and then related to the differentiation of in-order-to- and because-motives in the action theory of Alfred Schütz. A following quantitative-empirical analysis evaluates this concept and the resulting hypotheses. The data set is the Studierendensurvey made by the AG Hochschulforschung at the University Konstanz. By using binary logistic regression analysis certain influencial structures and specific profiles for the fields of study can be identified. Especially the concept of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation draws clear differentiations between professions. Structural changes are established over time, shown e.g. by the decreasing impact of social origin on the choice of the field of study. Finally the correlation between the influence effects of the choice of the field of study and the student satisfaction rate is analysed. Certain structures of the the choice of the field of study are also of an impact for student satisfaction.en_GB
