In this work, the synthesis of polyphenylene cylinders (PPC)s and their structurally related derivatives is described. These macrocyclic structures have been synthesized in different sizes and connectivity patterns. Their structural build-up renders them precursors for the bottom-up synthesis of ultrashort carbon nanotubes (CNT)s. At first, the synthesis of various PPCs was performed and their structures were elucidated by X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy. With these macrocyclic molecules in hand, the oxidative cyclodehydrogenation - an intramolecular annulation - was performed, leading to very promising results: for an optimized structure, a degree of cyclodehydrogenation of 50% was achieved, pushing the limits further toward a solution-based bottom-up synthesis of ultrashort CNTs. |
