Abstract:rnThe research described in the present work aims for the design and synthesis of new porphyrinoids by means of core-modification and π-extension of the porphyrin macrocycle. The main motivation to study artificial porphyrins is to control the porphyrin physico-chemical properties. The herein reported porphyrinoids were constructed with the help of contemporary synthetic protocols such as metal mediated coupling reaction to form aryl-aryl bonds. rnThe first part of the present work focuses on the modification of the porphyrin core. A porphyrin consists of two pyrrole and pyrrolenine units each, which were systematically exchanged by other heterocycles. Hereby, the pyrrole units were replaced by carbazoles. Since carbazole is a benzene-annulated pyrrole, it is particularly qualified. On the contrary, the pyrrolenine units were exchanged by various heterocycles, such as pyridine, pyrrole or triazole, for the following reasons: rn* mimicking the nitrogen pattern of the porphyrin’s trans-NH-tautomer (carbazole and pyridine)rn* mimicking the (NH)4 nitrogen pattern of calix[4]pyrroles (carbazole and pyrrole)rn* unifying N-H and C-H bond donor units in one macrocycle (carbazole and triazole)rnThe second part of the present work describes the synthesis of a π-extended trinuclear porphyrinoid. This research was inspired by the emerging interest in the field of non-precious metal catalysts for the reduction of oxygen (ORR) in fuel cells. Hereby, the development of N4-macrocyclic metal complexes is currently developing to the design of metal complexes providing multiple active sites. In this regard, the Müllen group has developed an unprecedented triangular trinuclear complex. Based on these results, the present work focused on the improvement of the performance by the modification of the triangular molecule in sense of selective substituent adjustment. The concept towards the tuning of the catalytic activity presented herein was based on the following considerations:rn* cross linking by network forming or though heat treatment in the mesophasesrn* improvement of the contact between the catalysts and carbon supportrnWithin the scope of this work, the syntheses, the study of the properties along with possible applications such as metal complexing agent, anion receptor or electrocatalysts for ORR were covered. The herein developed synthetic designs will guide future development of new porphyrinoids and will be helpful to gain a more thorough understanding of the potential of such materials.rnrn
