The dissertation from the department of History and Cultural Sciences of the Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz deals with column shrines in the catholic enclaves in the northern part of Hesse (Oberhessen). The thesis concentrates on the territory of the former district authority of Amöneburg, as these kinds of small monuments are preserved only in this area. This area belongs to the Archdiocese of Mainz and is a catholic enclave within a protestant domain. Territorially isolated form the catholic heartland and far from conventional column shrine's territories, the category of monument column shrines in Oberhessen is a special case. This thesis is the first systematic review of the column shrines in that area from a scientific and history of art perspective. The detailed study of the material includes both existing examples and source studies of formerly existing examples. Individual aspects of each column shrine are examined, including chronological order, individual naming, the formal development of the column shrine, the personalities of the donors, the location of the column shrines including re-locations, the visual connections, the iconography of the display as well as the inscriptions. From the complex interaction of the different factors and historical influences, different motives for the donations can be elaborated and the function of these shrines individually, and as a whole can be determined. It becomes clear that columns shrines are integrated in many ways into the social structure of the communities. Column shrines are donated due to a deep religious gratitude and plea, as well as the apotropaic protection, the eschatological aspect and the representation of the donor and the religious affiliation. The impact of the column shrines increases through the fact that many are the destinations for different processions. Due to the location as a fragmented catholic enclave within a protestant dominion aside from the Mainz heartland, the columns shrines evolved into their own special types. This is demonstrated in the shape and in the inscriptions as well as in the location and function. Often, four columns shrines surround settlements in a ring-like way and manifest the transition from the center of the settlement towards the protestant surroundings. Additionally, the displayed pictures are coordinated and they have been erected at the same time. For the first time many column shrines can be attributed to specific artists and craftsmen. This thesis proves the importance of the column shrines as a main component of the cultural landscape of the former catholic enclave. The sculptural art shows the indellible connection between religious, judicial, social and representative aspects of the donations that are typical for the enclave of Mainz. The identity generating column shrines are a public commitment to counter-reformation and a prominent territorial sign. They have done and continue to shape the appearance of the Mainz parish around Amöneburg in a self-confident way.en_GB
