Simulations of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) on the lattice allow for the computation of observables from first principles at low energies where per- turbation theory breaks down. In this study we use lattice QCD to compute the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) in order to extract the leading hadronic contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (a_mu^HLO), the Adler function, and the shift of the running of the fine structure constant (a^had_QED). Our work is based on ensembles generated by the Coordinated Lattice Simu- lations collaboration. We use two dynamical, degenerate, non-perturbatively O(a)-improved Wilson fermions. The strange- and charm-quark contributions are partially quenched. We use partially twisted boundary conditions to in- crease the momentum resolution of the HVP. A number of strategies are discussed to obtain a_mu^HLO, and an analysis of sys- tematic effects is included. The result for the four-quark result is a_mu^{HLO,udsc}=636:4(31:3)(33:2). We compute the Adler function with numerical derivatives from the HVP. At the physical point including systematic errors we reach a precision of 0.8%-3.5% for the Adler function depending on the flavour and Q^2. From the Adler function we compute a^had_QED with a precision of 2%-3% also including systematic errors at the physical point.
