In the present work some laboratory experiments were carried out about the uptake of NH3 by ice crystals in the atmosphere. Some ice crystals were exposed with an NH3 - air - mixture in ice saturated surroundings with the average speed of there fall velocity (“below cloud scavenging”) and some ice crystals were grown in presence of Ammonia (“in Cloud scavenging”). At long exposure of dendritic ice crystal with the NH3 - air mixture, the diffusion of the formed NH4+ into the ice crystal is decisive for the part of the NH3 from the gaseous phase, which stays as NH4+ in the ice after adsorption. Using a simple model of the diffusion into a ”semi infinite solid” the NH3 - uptake by non-growing ice crystals was described satisfactorily. Further experiments with non growing ice crystals containing some trace substances from the previous exposure by SO2 showed a clear increase of the NH3 - uptake from the gaseous phase. At typical atmospheric NH3 – volume mixing ratios, the uptake of NH3 by non growing ice crystals could be neglected But in the opposite, the uptake of NH3 by growing ice crystals is an important process in the atmosphere. |
