Cross-conjugated oligomers from benzene rings and heterocycles Conjugated or cross-conjugated oligomers, which consist ofarylene and/or hetarylene building blocks, represent an areaof wide current interest in organic synthesis and materialsscience. The enon-group of chalcones is a bifunctionalelectrophyle and suitable for the generation of severalheterocycles. In this work three new series of hetero-cyclical oligomers: 1H-pyrroles, 1H-pyrazoles and pyridineswere synthesized. These compounds consist of alternating chains of phenylene- or benzoylene units. Their preparationis based on Michael- type additions from the chain- formedcross-conjugated oligochalcones and the respectively suitable N-containing building blocks: tosylmethyl-isocyanide, methylhydrazine and phenacylpyridinium bromidein the series of the pyrroles, pyrazoles and pyridines. The UV/Vis examination of all series of oligoheterocyclesshowed a marked hypsochromic shift of the long-wavelengthabsorption as a general trend in comparison to the UV/Visbehaviour of oligochalcones. The observed hypsochromic shiftis attributable to the changed chromophores and moreoverindicates that the effective conjugation should be less inthe case of increasing molecule length. In the individualseries of the oligoheterocycles a small bathochromic shiftof the long-wavelength absorption is observable withincreasing number of repeating chromophores.
