Service goals

Gutenberg Open Science is the institutional open access repository at JGU and a service of the university library for scholarly publishing and the provision of research data.

Gutenberg Open Science supports the goals of free and unrestricted access to publicly funded scientific publications and the provision of research data in accordance with the FAIR principles as formulated in the Open Access Policy and the Guidelines for the Handling of Research Data.

Gutenberg Open Science is an interoperable building block in the network of overarching information infrastructures for science and follows recognized information-related quality standards to ensure the long-term and sustainable usability of publications and research data.

Guidelines for the publication of scientific documents

1. Description of the service and collection mandate

The collection mandate of Gutenberg Open Science refers to all publications by JGU employees. This includes both first and second publications, including electronic versions of original print publications.

When publishing on Gutenberg Open Science, the following free services are provided by the UB:

  • Provision of metadata in accordance with recognized library collection standards by qualified personnel
  • Allocation of permanent internet addresses (DOI and URN)
  • Secure storage (and availability) for a period of at least 10 years
  • Provision of the document for research and download
  • Provision of metadata for scientific search services via technical interfaces
  • Consulting on all related issues

2. Requirements for the use of Gutenberg Open Science

By signing the Deposit License, the rights holder grants the UB the right to make the publication available to the public under the terms of copyright law or a standardized subsequent use license. The licenses available are CC BY, CC BY-SA, and CC BY-ND. In addition, he/she grants the UB the right to carry out the the necessary measures for long-term archiving.

3. Publication requirements

The document to be published is complete and complies with the formal standards and formats commonly used in academia (e.g. monographs, edited volumes, dissertations, post-doctoral theses, journal articles, book contributions, conference papers, working papers).

It fulfills the generally accepted scientific quality requirements and identifies the intellectual property of others (received ideas and quotations are identified as such and the rights of third parties, e.g. in the case of figures, illustrations and tables, have been clarified). Information on the topic of good scientific practice can be found on the pages of the Academic Integrity project or on the DFG's Recommendations of the DFG.

The main file of the publication must always be uploaded in PDF format.

The uploaded original files of the documents as well as any additionally generated archive copies are free of technical protection measures. These include, above all, mechanisms in the sense of digital rights management (DRM), password protection and restrictions on the usability of documents (copy & paste, printing).

Open file formats suitable for long-term archiving must be used to store the documents. For more information about file formats, see Gutenberg Open Science Supported Formats.

Master's theses may be included in Gutenberg Open Science as an exception and upon special recommendation of the supervisor. We do not publish bachelor's theses or term papers.

4. Availability and long-term archiving

All publications and research data are made available on Gutenberg Open Science for a period of at least 10 years. In addition, long-term archiving is provided in cooperation with the German National Library (DNB). This service is free of charge for you. You give us your consent to the storage of data by the DNB for any necessary technical data migrations with the Deposit License.

5. Document versions and deletions

Once published, documents can only be deleted from the server or blocked from access in exceptional cases (especially in the case of legal obstacles). Any costs incurred for this are to be borne by the authors.

A revised version of a previously published document is made available as a stand-alone publication on Gutenberg Open Science.

6. Technical operation of the service

The technical realization of Gutenberg Open Science is based on DSpace version 6.3, an internationally used open source software for publication and data repositories.

The OAI interface can be reached via https://openscience.ub.uni-mainz.de/oai/request? (https://openscience.ub.uni-mainz.de/oai/request?verb=Identify). Metadata is captured according to the Dublin Core specifications and is available in oia_dc, xmetadissplus, epicur and dim formats.

The technical infrastructure is hosted in the data center of the University of Mainz and is subject to the central Data Privacy Statement of the JGU Mainz and the Data Privacy Statement of the University Library Mainz. The affected servers are backed up decentrally. Furthermore, the pure metadata is exported daily and also backed up.

Access to this service is stored anonymously in the log files of the web server. Personal usage profiles are not created. The data is not passed on to third parties. Gutenberg Open Science does not use any techniques aimed at evaluating the access behavior of individual users.
